OSTRICH FEATHER

This paper is an outstanding example of Art Nouveau; a rebellious movement which forced a break from the stifled traditional decoration which had come to dominate European interiors.

Discovered within Yorkshire’s Scampston Hall, this delicate design takes its inspiration from the ostrich feather, a symbol of luxury inspired by the booming Victorian fashion trade which almost saw the bird hunted to extinction. Its natural form embraces the typical organic lines and ‘whiplash’ curves of the Art Nouveau movement, originally block-printed as a celebration of the artisanal craftsmanship mass manufacturing threatened to take away.
