In the 1920s and 1930s, design was searching for new ‘modern’ forms, with these stylised geometric motifs at the forefront of the emerging Art Deco movement. But these designs have been popular before, found in ancient Egyptian friezes and ancient Greek columns. Representing life and death, this stylised floral pattern has been with us for millennia, cycling through the centuries in hundreds of iterations – who really decides what’s modern when design keeps returning to the past?

The paper is hand painted and the colours are mixed by hand and matched by eye which means the batches do vary slightly.
